Provincial Bodyguard
A word from the Commander of the Provincial Bodyguard E.Kt. Nick C. Blackmore
The Provincial Prior’s Bodyguard is made up of representatives of most of the Preceptories in the Province of Middlesex. It is my pleasant duty, having considered all relevant matters carefully, to recommend Knights to the Provincial Prior for appointment to his Bodyguard. The Provincial Prior ultimately decides who should serve as a member of his Bodyguard. The first stage of the development of Bodyguard members is for a Knight to serve as a probationer for a period usually not exceeding one year. So, you will note that appointment as a full member of the Provincial Prior’s Bodyguard is far from automatic. It is also quite clearly an honour and privilege to serve.
The Knights selected to serve in the Provincial Prior’s Bodyguard are considered to be an integral part of the Provincial Team. When the Provincial Prior, or Provincial Sub-Prior, formally visits a Preceptory, members of the Bodyguard attend and form an Arch of Steel at their procession into, and the recession from, the Preceptory. Bodyguard members also undertake key duties at the Annual Meeting of Provincial Priory and the Bi-Annual Church Service.
It is important for me to point out that the Right Eminent Provincial Prior expects all members of his Bodyguard to join Arch of Steel Preceptory No. 591.
Perhaps the most talked about aspect of membership of the Bodyguard is the bonds of friendship formed with other Bodyguard members. These friendships continue throughout and beyond a Knights membership of the Bodyguard. A number of senior members of the Province have served as Bodyguard members and this includes the Right Eminent Provincial Prior himself.
